Our Story

The people behind The Whisky List and the cult whisky classic Mad Maxine would like to introduce a new creation, Burke & Wills Whisky.

Burke & Wills is an independent bottler that has been purchasing barrels of new make spirit since 2017 from the best distilleries all across Australia.

Each release will be cask strength or close to it, always a single cask, and in 700ml bottles.

Portrait of our namesakes Burke & Wills

A Short History of Burke & Wills

Named after the iconic duo, Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills, who were Australian explorers in the 1800s. Their expedition, one of the most expensive in Australian history, contained 27 camels and was lavishly equipped with all manner of household items including an oak table.  The expedition’s departure from Royal Park, Melbourne on 20 August 1860 was a public spectacle watched by about 15,000 people.

They set out to chart a route from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, but due to a run of spectacular bad luck, they died of thirst. So we named a whisky after them.

Celebrating (tongue firmly in cheek) in true Australian style the people and events that have helped contribute to the unique sense of self only found in Australia. We present a range of unique, amazing Australian whiskies we have found and sourced from all around this epic island nation of ours, lovingly crafted by living legends.

Celebrating Aussie Heroes (& Failures)

Burke & Wills Whisky is a toast to Australia's most memorable mishaps. May those who drink this whisky fare better than our namesakes!

Each Burke & Wills release contains a tale of past Aussie here. Our first release recounts the story of The Great Emu War. A 1932 Australian military campaign against a pesky population of Emus. Despite the 10,000 bullets, the emus ultimately won.
